Editor's Corner

I want to let everyone know that, as it is seen in the moment, this is the last newsletter I will be putting together for a while. I have been asked "what will happen to the website?". The answer is that it will continue to function for another month and then be taken down. This is because, among other things, there are a lot of updates and changes that need to happen to bring it up-to-date. I may be able to make the necessary changes at some point in the future but, being that I am currently being pulled in other directions, it will most likely be a while.

I want to thank my loyal readers for sticking with me through this wonderful learning experience. I hope everyone enjoyed reading these newsletters at least as much as I enjoyed putting them together. If you would like to browse previous issues without digging through your email, click here to see our archives, but the archives will go down with the website, so read them while you can!

That's it from me for now. Enjoy this newsletter and have a Happy Halloween.

Shell-dorado: Extremely rare gold-colored lobster pulled from sea off Northern France
A fisherman in Northern France has landed himself the catch of a lifetime – an extremely rare yellow lobster. Yann Duchesne plucked the gold-colored crustacean from one of his pots near Île Saint-Rion in Paimpol Bay on the Côtes-d'Armor last week and quickly ruled out making a meal of his discovery. "It's out of the question that he ends up on a plate, when you only meet one in your life. Like all that is rare, it must be seen," Duchesne told Ouest France. According to the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine in the US, there is only one yellow lobster in 30 million. In cases of blue lobsters, the number rises to one in two million. Meanwhile, the rarest type is the albino lobster – the chances of finding one are around one in 100 million. Duchesne’s yellow lobster has now been sold to the Grand Aquarium in nearby St Melo. “He is doing well and eats well,” said aquariologist Yann Guillouzo in an email to Guillouzo said there has been a rise in the number of brightly colored lobsters found in European waters this year, with some having a rich blue and orange tint.

Ancient Arctic jellyfish spotted by scientists in rare encounter (VIDEO)
Creatures that dwell deep below the Arctic ice are rarely seen by humans, however, a recently released video by Columbia University’s Earth Institute offers a glimpse of one of the world’s many bizarre inhabitants. The team from Columbia University, Andy Juhl and his colleagues, used snowmobiles to access this barren arctic terrain, drilling holes in the ice and peering into the world below with video cameras. What they found surprised them. The most interesting specimen they encountered was an ancient arctic jellyfish, which trailed its huge tentacles along the sea floor. The scientists were amazed to see the Chrysaora melanaster jellyfish, because they are generally thought to live only a few months. Scientists had previously assumed that the jellyfish only live for a few months, and survived the winter “only in a life stage called polyps–formless masses that cling to rocks and release little baby medusae in the spring.”

Two-thirds of US baby foods test positive for arsenic, many contain lead & cadmium – study
Some 65 percent of baby food products in the US – including four out of five baby formulas – contain traces of the toxin arsenic, a new study has found, but officials say there is little they can do to remove substances that could harm developing infants. The Clean Label Project study of 530 baby products also found that 36 percent of the products contained lead, 58 percent cadmium and 10 percent acrylamide. While most samples contained only trace amounts of the toxins, some exceeded the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendations by up to six times. The transparent labeling advocacy group said that Gerber, Enfamil, Plum Organics and Sprout – market-leading brands – produced some of the most contaminated baby foods. “The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America’s most vulnerable population,” Jaclyn Brown, the executive director of the Clean Label Project, told USA Today.

Within five years, it's going to catch Apple which has a more than $800 billion market cap,” the analyst said in an interview with CNBC. Bitcoin's current market cap is over $95 billion, according to the data from Meanwhile, the market value of Goldman Sachs Group was $93.51 billion in New York in after-hours trading, while Apple's market cap was $807.89 billion.

New Zealand homes ‘no longer for sale’ to foreigners
Foreigners will soon not be allowed to buy existing homes in New Zealand as the country is facing a housing affordability crisis due to soaring property prices. "We have agreed on banning the purchase of existing homes by foreign buyers," said Prime Minister-elect Jacinda Ardern, adding the ban only applied to non-residents. A bill to ban purchases will be introduced by Christmas, she said, also announcing plans to slash immigration and focus on regional development and job creation. Strong immigration, low interest rates, and limited housing supplies have propelled New Zealand house prices in recent years. Foreign ownership and a housing shortage were among the major issues in the lead-up to the September 23 election which brought an end to nine years of rule by the conservative National Party. Ardern, who campaigned on social issues including housing affordability and improved healthcare, has described capitalism as a “blatant failure.”

Unusual Space Event – Mysterious Fast Object Just Flew Past Earth
There are many objects floating around in our solar system and astronomers are familiar with most of them. But every now and then ‘something’ passes our planet and scientists simply cannot say what it was. This just happened when astronomers in Hawaii using the PanSTARRS1 telescope observed a weird object travelling through space at a speed of 16 miles per second. The unknown object swooped around our Sun, passed Earth at a distance of around 15 million miles and then vanished back into space! This is a very unusual event and astronomers are not trying to figure out the nature of the space object. Astronomer Rob Weryk first spotted the object, called A/2017 U1 on October 19 while using the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii, according to NASA. The object is less than a quarter-mile (400 meters) in diameter and is moving remarkably fast. NASA first suggested the object is an asteroid or perhaps a comet.

Jets of ionospheric cold plasma discovered at the magnetopause
The Sun and Earth both produce powerful magnetic fields, and their intersection develops a complex system of physics that determines the space weather experienced by our planet. The solar wind - a constant stream of charged particles (plasma) emitted from the Sun - collides with Earth’s magnetic field, like water flowing around a rock in a river. The collision of the two magnetic fields produces a phenomenon known as magnetic reconnection, in which the field lines of both the planet and its star snap together following the perturbation. The process releases jets of high-energy plasma, which can produce auroras and disrupt communication systems when they collide with Earth’s magnetic field. Scientists believe that plasma from the magnetosheath - the magnetically weak layer of the magnetosphere where Earth’s field contacts the outflowing solar wind - is the dominant driver of magnetic reconnection. However, a new publication by Li et al. shows that 'cold' plasma from the planet’s ionosphere may play a larger role than previously thought.
