Editor's Corner

Greetings,
Did you know that bee-harming pesticides have now been detected in a large percentage of the worlds honey? Apparently, in a global survey "Three out of four honey samples tested contained measurable levels of at least one of five common neonicotinoids". Click here

While we're on the subject of insects, have you seen the TED Talk titled "Mind-blowing, magnified portraits of insects"? The talk itself isn't bad but his website of "magnified portraits of insects", Microsculpture.net, is really spectacular. Click here

Speaking of websites, have you seen the Ventusky website? Their entire website is a map of the world overlaid with color to show temperature, wind, or rain anywhere in the world. You can even look backwards and forwards in time to some extent. Click here

There's more, but I will leave the rest for you to discover and enjoy. Have a wonderful week.

Major fireball explodes over Shangri-La, China, meteorites very likely
A major fireball was observed and recorded over southwest China at 12:07 UTC (20:07 local time) on October 4, 2017. The event lasted more than 10 seconds before the object disintegrated in a very bright flash. It was followed by a sonic boom. According to witness reports, the object exploded over Shangri-La City in China's Yunnan Province. There were reportedly three objects exploding in the sky. "This is a very big rock from space, and somewhere in China, there are fresh meteorites on the ground waiting to be found," David Finlay or Australian Meteor Reports said. According to media reports, the people in Shangri-La were observing the full moon to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival when the event happened. "Everyone was amazed when the rocks appeared in the sky," one eyewitness said, adding that he heard the meteorites landed in a small village some 40 km (25 miles) outside of Shangri-La.

Powerful, fast-moving Hurricane "Nate" to slam into US Gulf Coast
After killing at least 22 people in Central America, Nate is now a Category 1 hurricane on its way toward the US Gulf Coast. Its center will move across the central and northern Gulf of Mexico today and make landfall as Category 1 hurricane or stronger along the central U.S. Gulf coast tonight (CDT). Nate is bringing heavy rain, powerful winds, dangerous storm surge and life-threatening surf and rip-conditions. Isolated tornadoes will be possible beginning later today over parts of the central Gulf Coast region. This is a powerful and fast-moving storm. Nate prompted evacuations in low-lying coastal Louisiana parishes and Alabama and Mississippi and many preparations have already taken place. However, those still underway need to be rushed to completition as conditions along the coast will rapidly deteriorate starting Saturday afternoon (local time). Nate will most likely be a strong Category 1 hurricane possibly Category 2 as it makes landfall Saturday evening into Saturday night (CDT).

Bright sparks: Irish scientists can make electricity from your tears
If your electricity bill makes you want to cry, then you’re already on the way to saving yourself some money, according to new groundbreaking research. Scientists in Ireland have revealed that they can generate electricity from tears – and other human fluids such as milk and saliva. The breakthrough could one day be used to control the release of drugs in the body using devices capable of taking energy from their surroundings, according to researchers. Such technology could ultimately replace current biomedical machines which contain lead and other toxic chemicals. The study, published in the journal Applied Physics Letters and conducted by researchers from the Institute of Bernal at the University of Limerick, outlines how the team applied pressure to crystals of lysozyme, a protein found in egg whites and human fluids. The experiments revealed evidence of ‘piezoelectricity,’ a process in which an electrical charge is sparked in response to the application of mechanical stress.

Much of the world’s honey now contains bee-harming pesticides
Neonicotinoid pesticides are turning up in honey on every continent with honeybees. The first global honey survey testing for these controversial nicotine-derived pesticides shows just how widely honeybees are exposed to the chemicals, which have been shown to affect the health of bees and other insects. Three out of four honey samples tested contained measurable levels of at least one of five common neonicotinoids, researchers report in the Oct. 6 Science. “On the global scale, the contamination is really striking,” says study coauthor Edward Mitchell, a soil biologist at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The pesticides are used on many kinds of crops grown in different climates, but traces of the chemicals showed up even in honey from remote islands with very little agriculture. “I used to think of neonicotinoids as being a [localized] problem next to a small set of crops,” says Amro Zayed, who studies bees at York University in Toronto and wasn’t involved in the research. These pesticides “are much more prevalent than I previously thought.”
